 The main issue of the project was the initialization + calibration of the ESC's. An oscilloscope was required to understand how the ESC used worked by probing the input signals from the vendor supplied controller board. With the scope results, we were able to determine the proper PWM frequency to use and what duty cycles corresponded to the minimum, idle, and max drive for the ESC.
